The Alpine A290, the sporty variant of the Renault 5, is here. It’s a compact electric hot hatchback, at just 3.99m long. But while the technology, the platform and everything else is new, this is a deliciously old-school feeling hot hatchback. You can get one with 178bhp or, as tested here, a 217bhp version. Both weigh the same, at less than 1500kg.

There’s a 52kWh battery. Finalised prices will come in January but the meat of the range will be mid-£30ks, with the top spec variant as tested around £38,000. Join Matt Prior as he tests the new Alpine pocket rocket on both road and track and finds out whether the hot hatch is back, and how.
