MG Cyberster vs BMW Z4 - new all-electric and 6cyl petrol convertible shootout

MG has returned to an arena that it left more than a decade ago, when the long-lived MG TF finally went out of production, with its latest new model introduction. The MG Cyberster is the first convertible launched by the brand since its acquisition by SAIC. At once a recognition of the brand's heritage and a statement of ambition for its future, the Cyberster brings MG back towards its roots as a sports car maker; though it's anything but traditional.

All-electric, and available with either single-motor rear-wheel drive (the Trophy model, as tested) or twin-motor four-wheel drive (GT), the Cyberster becomes an alternative zero-emissions option in a class that's widely still wedded to combustion engines. So how does it stand up when compared with one of those more traditional ICE-powered options: specifically, the BMW Z4 - now available with manual gearbox?

You might think a six-cylinder BMW Z4 anything but a rival for an electric MG convertible - but the Cyberster Trophy and Z4 sDrive M40i with Handschalter Package are actually quite closely matched on price (£55k to £63k), power (335bhp each) and performance (0-62mph in 5.0sec and 4.6sec respectively).

So exactly how has Chinese-owned MG Motor measured up to the established skill and might of BMW here; and which of these cars would better suit your preferences for some occasional al fresco motoring? Matt Saunders is your guide.
