Japan's Reiwa Era
As morning breaks in Japan, renowned Japanologist Carol Gluck (George Sansom Professor of History, Columbia University in the City of New York and Japan Society Board Member) offers insights on this monumental change:
"On May 1, Japan’s new Emperor Naruhito ascends the throne abdicated by his father the previous day. The elaborate enthronement ceremonies will take place in the fall. At 59 Naruhito has long served as Crown Prince and is expected to continue the modest demeanor and steady service associated with his father, although no one can say how his reign will be judged until it unfolds. Because a new emperor means a new reign-name, May 1 is the first day of Reiwa, in effect the beginning of a New Year. The name means Auspicious Harmony, but the nature of the period, too, cannot be grasped until it happens. Japanese stand at the beginning of a new, promising, if as yet undefined, era in their modern history."
