(日本語字幕あり) People often say "Japanese are shy", even Japanese themselfs often say it and all the time I hear it, the situations it is used in, its clear that the person saying this isn't meaning that they are shy in the sence of the English meaning.
Japanese view people in the foreign world, as to be "non shy", meaning they can go up to strangers and become friends soon, talk on trains to strangers, be excited and get loud and roudy. This is not shy.
Japanese people also often = shy to just being quite.
This is custom to be quiet on trains, in public, in elevators. And its not normal to become friends with ppl on train, random strangers. This doesn't mean its cause they are shy.
There are shy people in all countries, it is a human trait, and its defined as an abnormal behavior in a social setting. The disaiblity to speak to strangers because you are "shy". It has nothing to do with being open to make friends based on cultural reasons.
Another way the word shy is used in Japan, is "shy to speak English". Which in this case, means nervious or afraid, not confident and refrain from doing so. You will hear everyone say this and its not an actual shyness, its simply with any language speaker, you are afraid to use your language sometimes because you are not confident or used to it.
I forgot to mention, but another example of forced non shy situation, KARAOKE. Japan, karaoke culture is quite normal, I have yet to meet someone who is afraid to give it their all at karaoke, even if they just met me. I am usually the one who is like "next person, you go first!, I can't". But then again, I am the only shy person I have yet to meet in Japan.
