For those learning a language, in this case Japanese, the challenge of switching between two foreign methods of communication is one of the greatest tasks. So who better to talk to then someone who makes a living doing just that!
Marie Iida is a Japanese translator/interpreter for numerous organizations, events and productions, including our very own Japan Society! We talk with her today about some of the biggest challenges of interpretation, in particular, unique challenges the Japanese language presents. 四字熟語 (yoji jukugo) = 4-character idioms
切磋琢磨 (sessa takuma) = to cultivate one’s character by studying hard
一隅を照らす (ichiguu o terasu) = to do one’s best to contribute to greater good
木漏れ日 (komorebi) = sunlight filtered through dancing leaves
