Did you know these remote islands were actually occupied by the USA? It was only relatively recently, around 60 years ago, that the Ogasawara Islands were returned to Japan.
Although the islands once had a thriving population of over 7,000 people, everyone was forced to evacuate to mainland during the second world war, and the islands were re occupied by the Japanese military instead.
After the war, the US occupied the islands, but returned them to Japan in 1968, it was only after that, that the Japanese were able to move back and re-settle on the island. Everything you see on the island now, including the lush forestation, could only thrive after the war, making the ecosystem relatively young here.
Many remnants of the war remain scattered around the island, and are preserved and used as educational tools for visitors. This forest is like a living museum.
