A Giant Leap: The Transformation of Hasegawa Tōhaku
First Rotation: March 9—April 8, 2018
Second Rotation: April 12—May 6, 2018
Much of master painter Hasegawa Tо̄haku’s life is still shrouded in mystery. One major reason for this is that halfway through his career he changed his name. Before moving to Kyoto around 1571, Tо̄haku signed his works Nobuharu. Three of the earliest known folding screens from this “Nobuharu” period are the missing link that enabled scholars and curators to determine that Nobuharu and Tо̄haku were the same artist only very recently. Notice the similarities between the tree trunks, vines and clouds in the three drastically different “missing links,” the first two of which are on view at Japan Society Gallery.
