Celebrating New Years Day in Japan is a little different than in the west, rather than throw loud parties, or count down the seconds under a gigantic firework display, people in Japan like to return to their families, eat soba, and spend a quiet evening in. The next day, they will usually visit a shrine (hatsu-mode), while others might prefer to catch the first sunrise of the new year (hatsu-hi-no-de).
We chose to challenge the first sunrise of the new year, so we woke up around 3am, and headed to the mountains.
The mountain we climbed was Tenzan (1046m), in Tenzan Prefectural Natural Park, and I was going to link to it but there's barely any information about it online in English OR Japanese. If you're in the Northern Kyushu area, you can find this spot by pinning the parking lot on google maps, and following the trails to the top of the mountain.
It's amazing for a romantic and intimate night view of Saga City (and surrounding cities) I'd definitely like to come back and shoot the sunrise again, but I think I'd prefer to try it in the summer, when it's a lot warmer.
