PUBLIC FORUM
Monday, May 14, 7:30 PM
What can theater do for immigrant communities and for progressing the female voice? Join Shirotama Hitsujiya, internationally known performance artist, in this public forum that expands upon her ongoing project to collect personal stories from Southeast Asian women. Hitsujiya, also known for her experimental theater company YUBIWA HOTEL, will now gather the voices of female Vietnamese immigrants living in New York City during her month-long residency. Their words will be compiled into a script and transcribed onto a rice-paper handscroll, or makimono, that will be read aloud by a panel of local female theater artists and professionals. The evening culminates in an intimate discussion with the audience.
This program is presented in connection with AJOKAI (Asian Women Performing Arts Collective), a networking organization for women in theater, dance, and film industries throughout Asian, which Hitsujiya co-founded.
