Unzen is such a nice area to visit if you have a car - the remote location away from any major train lines makes it a quiet and peaceful hot spring town, free from excessive tourism or gimmicks that other, more popular destinations have.

If you live in Kyushu (especially Kumamoto, Nagasaki, Saga, or Fukuoka) a weekend trip to Unzen is a great choice if you:

✅ Have a Driver's Licence
✅ Enjoy Hiking and Nature
✅ Are an Independent Traveler
✅ Want a Secluded Getaway

The nearby towns of Minami-Shimabara and Obama are just a short drive down either side of the mountain, and offer their own attractions as well (such as dolphin watching!)
